Is Your Vehicles Air-Conditioning System Well Serviced?
Posted October 29, 2021
There is nothing more awful then realizing during the first hot days of summer that your cars air-conditioning doesn’t perform well or even worse has stopped blowing cold at all.
Automotive air conditioning systems rely on being filled with a very specific amount of refrigerant (A/C gas) and oil to function correctly, because of this it is considered good practice to carry out a service on this system at least every 2 years.
As well as poor performance, loss of gas or compressor oil from a system can result in mechanical failures, failure of an item like an air-conditioning compressor can spread debris through the entire system. In this scenario most parts in the A/C system would need to be replaced to make it reliable again, costs on a repair like this run into the thousands quickly, even on vehicles where components are well priced.
Thankfully servicing your car air-conditioning system is a simple process on pretty much any vehicle fitted with air-conditioning, the technician will check the compressor drive belt condition, check your current refrigerant system gas pressures, air temperature out the vents, check for any leaks and carry out a diagnostic scan of the cars comfort computer for any faults, taking notes of any findings.
The technician then removes the gas from the system and fills it with a vacuum, this purges the system completely as well as verifying the system is entirely leak free. The system is then filled with a weighed amount of gas accurate to a gram of what is optimal for the system as well as new compressor oil, injected into the system accurate to a millilitre of the perfect specified amount. Then the gas pressures and vent temperature are rechecked with the system operating post service.
On systems that work perfectly fine prior to this sort of service it is not uncommon to see the air temperature out the vents drop significantly on the cars coldest setting, its great to see these kinds of results.
Is your cars air-conditioning system well serviced? Does it work as well as it should? Would like to ensure its operating at its best over the coming summer?
Here at Tony’s Auto Clinic, we have invested in some of best equipment available to work with these systems, the Bosch ACS650. By utilizing a fully automated closed loop system, we can be certain the amounts of gas and oil in the system are correct, maximizing reliability and efficiency. This system also allows us to efficiently recycle our refrigerant gases, something we consider important as these compounds are harmful to the environment when they are not recycled or disposed of correctly.
